Dari mana punai melayang?
Dari sawah turun ke padi;
Dari mana datangnya sayang?
Dari mata turun ke hati.
I rushed to Central Market after meeting my client, coz i don't want to miss this exhibition. Last day yesterday (22-2-09). Just wanna share with u what Pang wrote in the Exhibition's Booklet.
What's Love Gotta Do With It?

Lepakking at Central Market made me who I am today. Like the kampung folks arriving at Pudu and the migrant workers hanging around Jalan Hang Kasturi, I am one of many who came to Kuala Lumpur looking for a dream. While studying graphic design in the early 90s, I spent much time here watching the artists perform their magic as they bring to life the most mundane of photos. I was reminded of a line from a French film about the sculptor Rodin, that his sculptures were more alive than his models. To me then, the CM portraits were more than real, elevating their subjects with an innate understanding of what made them worth the commission in the first place.
Eventually, I gave up graphic design because I couldn't stand being ordered around by dim-witted clients. Which makes it even more astounding to me how the CM artists keep doing it, taking commissions from royalty and commoners alike, some of them from even before the beginning of Central Market as a cultural centre in 1987. You can't help but admire their humility in offering their divine gifts to serve the masses. On one hand it's easy to dismiss what they do as just simply a job. Yet we resist such cynicism because we know we understand and need art's romanticism. No, photography isn't quite the same. It's this paintbrushed and finger-smudged romanticism, this hunt for Mona Lisa's smile, this catching of the breeze and tropical chills, that continues to thrive at Central Market Annexe today.
In March 2007, The Annexe Gallery organised the first group exhibition of works by the Central Market artists, titled "21 Years On". And now, it's 23 years on! I never dreamed that one day I would be here to serve these distinguished artists. What a calling! As such, I felt the gallery had to honour these artists whose reputation we borrow as we try to establish Central Market as a place of culture and arts. And we want to pay tribute to their legacy of inspiration. Some of the younger CM artists can tell you how they regarded their elders as role models. In aiming to showcase the range of artistic talents here, the first show had no thematic structure other than asking the artists to feature works different from their usual commission.
